Top 5 low
capital home business ideas perfect for the Nigerian mom.
It's not easy being a stay at home mom,
and having a job at the same time.
Often you are the first to wake up and last to
sleep: juggling all sorts of duties and chores, not easy at all!
But there's
joy and a sense of accomplishment whenever you are able to provide for the kids
and family.
It's not easy but its possible, so here are
some ways to make some extra cash from home.
Online jobs for mums
Working online is perhaps the easiest way
to make money now as a stay at home mom.
Comparing the pros to its cons, its no
surprise why.
It's easier, faster, can be done from
anywhere as far as you have an Internet connection.
There are so many jobs and opportunities
available, whether you have knowledge and experience or not.
It also gives a decent income once you get
the hang of it, and you get to control your time and life schedule.
What could better?
On the downside, like many others, I've
seen its con's.
Time, effort, money (for courses and
personal development), and maybe a bit of your sanity sometimes.
Online jobs can make you as much as $500
per month. For the average Nigerian, that's about N180,000. That's about 6x the new
minimum wage.

You can start almost immediately with a
marketable skill like web design and content writing.
You can learn as you go with others like
network marketing, drop shipping and mini importation.
To find one that's fit for you, you need to
do detailed research, possibly take courses and have a mentor.
Each requires certain type of knowledge,
environment, time and effort, and of course pays differently too.
Personally,as a SAHM with no skills, no
experience and no capital, I've found that certain models allow me to get my
dream lifestyle faster and easier as a mother.

Perhaps the online ways are not for you.
Here are ways you can still work from home anywhere in Nigeria.

This is a very short list, and just for things
that require no capital or very small capital while they have been known to work from home
as businesses.
Bookmark this page and check back for updates soon which will include others that work so
you can have a whole lot to choose from if one of them is not a fit for you.
Handcrafts;
Making and reselling
Most
Nigerian women are fortunate to learn one form of handcraft or another at a
point in our lives. It can be beads or jewellery making, soap making,
tailoring, making of bags.....the list is endless.
By charging
for your goods and services, you can use knowledge and skills you already have,
a small amount of money, make such items at home at your leisure and sell it to
people who need it offline or online. You can also sell to other people who can
resell it for profit.
Making and
reselling of handcrafts is a good way to make money from home as a Nigerian mum
because you do it at your own time and pace, your children can get involved and
learn it too, and it can fetch you a decent amount of money depending on what
you make, how much you charge for it and the quality.
The start-up
capital is also not much, and no one controls your time so you can be with your
kids as often as they need you.
Fast moving
consumer goods
How many
times do you shop for provisions?
Daily, Weekly, Monthly?
From
toothpaste to seasonings and spices, soaps and hair care products.....the list
is endless.
The reason
they are called fast moving, is well, because they “move fast”. We need them,
day in, day out, come rain, come sunshine.
And the good
part for you, you can make money as they move. Though it requires a bit of
capital to start, this is a great work from home opportunity if you live in an
urban area.
You can source for the items cheaply from main markets, and wholesalers when you go shopping for your
own things (to save on transport), and sell at the normal retail price or with a slightly higher
profit margin.
Just make
sure it is not too expensive or you will chase away all your customers, and
keep your prices constant.
You can also
add foodstuffs to it, soup ingredients, charcoal and kerosene (for those of us whose gas can finish early in the mornings) as some people can buy from
you everyday, or when they run out of it and do not want to go to the
market.....just use your knowledge of what moves fast in your area.
The downside
of this is that the profit margin can be quite low for some things, as low as
N10, but when it adds up for a lot of things can make a really sizable income
for you, and those that were born to always buy on credit ehn!
Well you
have to learn how to handle those types of people.
Hair care
and body care
These days I
really miss my sister!
For just 20 simple braids with no other hair accessory, it’s
N500. And every week it’s the same.
Anyway, as
women you all know how much we love beautiful hair, and young looking, fresh
skin.
And you know
it isn’t cheap at all. So no matter your level of skill, beginner or
designer-level expert, it’s possible this is the home business idea for you.
Look good,
make money, help others to look good too. It can be your neighbours, relatives,
people you don’t even know.
If you feel
you do not have sufficient skill for it, you can start small by making school
children’s hair, neighbours and relatives, and your skill will improve over
time.
Help others
with their hair and skin problems if you know the way out, making or buying of
hair and skin care products, accessories, offering of services such as skin
care for brides are just a few ways you can make money this way.
You can even
spare time to learn things as you are running your business so you become
better qualified, and make more money from it.
Animal
production at home
Do you have
some space where you can use to raise a few animals at home?
Animal
production is a lucrative home business for Nigerian women.
Naijaland
people love meat, no matter the season or economic state of the country. From
poultry (chicken, ducks, pigeons) to the four legged animals like goat and
sheep (don’t recommend cows at home) you can raise a number of them comfortably
and cheaply at home, and sell them whenever you need quick cash or during
festive seasons.
If you do
not have a lot of capital, or experience, it is best to start with local breeds
because they require less feeding, health care and maintenance in terms of
housing. You also do not need extensive knowledge about them.
This is a
profitable way to make money from home as a
stay at home mum in Nigeria because a lot of people now prefer local
breeds because of health issues.
You can
easily sell to your neighbours, relatives, food sellers around your area etc.
This method
will not fetch millions within a short while, but over time it has proven to be
one of the most lucrative businesses in Nigeria on a large scale.
It also
takes time and hard work to really fatten some animals, there will be factors
that will be out of your control like disease epidemics.
Also regular
cleaning of where they stay is very important, especially if you live in a
place with lots of people, as the smell can be really offensive.
The upside is that you can start with low capital. It provides a quick source of
cash. There are no calls to make, bills to pay, or special skill and knowledge
needed. You can learn all you need to know in a short while.
Transport Business
This is one of the most profitable home business that can give passive income for a woman that really wants to stay home. it is also one of the most expensive.
You can purchase the vehicle, be it a car, bike, keke, bus, even bicycles and wheel barrows.
what you do is that you rent them out to a good driver, and expect a certain amount weekly or monthly.
The bikes can be rented by small children in your area who don't have their own for fun, learning or even errands. Things to note are:
- This depends on your locality, so you should choose the best type. There are places bikes are not allowed, or you can be in a place where having a wheel barrow to rent out will be useless.
- It needs capital, for starting and maintenance.
- You need a good and trustworthy driver.
- The profit is really good, and passive. You have all your time to your self.
This is
really a very short list, but for a start, it is should be better, cheaper and easier to start than most of
the work from home ideas for Nigerians, especially for women .
The disadvantage is however the low returns they can give.
This you can easily solve by combining two or more of these ideas at once.
Other business you can try:
- Tutoring (after-school lessons)
- Professional make-up
- Cake making for special events
- Drop shipping
- Affiliate marketing
- Network Marketing
- Selling of information products (ebooks, online courses).
- Freelancing
- Blogging
- POS business
